How TUI drives workforce success through apprenticeship assessments with iCQ Awards
TUI is a household name in the travel industry and the largest tour operator in Europe.
Across the country TUI employs 9,000 people on its aircrafts and at airports as well as at its Head Office in Luton, Contact Centre in Wales and numerous retail stores around the UK.
TUI is an employer of choice in the travel sector and in August it posted record TUI reports, with bookings in the UK ahead of other markets that it operates such as the Netherlands and Germany.
At the core of TUI’s workforce strategy is apprenticeships. Over the last 15 years TUI has recruited thousands of apprentices across its operations.
As an employer provider in their own right, the apprenticeships on offer span customer facing travel consultant roles to back-office administration, cabin crew and operations manager positions.
The success of their apprenticeship programmes is borne out by a consistently high pass rate and much improved employee retention across the business in recent years.
Apprenticeships at TUI have also supported workforce diversity and a more equitable gender balance than was the case previously.
iCQ Awards, part of The Workforce Development Trust, is the End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) for the tour operator, with the two organisations working together since May 2023.
Marsha Myles – Chartered MCIPD, BA HONs – Emerging Talent & Apprenticeships Manager explains why they made the switch to iCQ Awards:
“iCQ Awards have been fabulous, a joy to work with!
“Apprentices go through gateway in a quick and timely manner, leading to lots of distinctions.
“iCQ also goes out of its way to support people with SEND, providing extra time, adapting their ways of working to enable apprentices to succeed.
“Their personal touch and their unique iLearner assessment management system means I wouldn’t recommend working with anyone else.”
As the sister organisation of People 1st International, the not for profit responsible for designing apprenticeship standards for the travel industry, iCQ Awards is now able to draw on decades of experience in supporting workforce development in the sector.
iCQ Awards Managing Director Dennis Twomey comments:
“Working with a brand as iconic as TUI has been a true pleasure, not least because of their highly professional approach to apprenticeships.
“With a mature and well-oiled apprenticeship programme embedded within their workforce strategy, we look forward to continuing to work with TUI through apprenticeship funding and assessment rules changes on the horizon to make sure they can keep delivering for apprentices.”
